Are Spring Assisted Knifes Illegal In Kentucky?

by on 2009/11/06

I am 15 and i would like to purchase a spring assisted knife, but first i would like to make sure it is legal. Also what about butterfly knifes because i already own one of those and i dont want to get in trouble for owning it.

Both are illegal in Kentucky — but as long as you don’t take them to school or flash them, then there shouldn’t be any problem. I’ve always heard as a general rule only regular pocket knives or hunting knives are legal and the blade must not be longer than the palm of your hand when holding your hand horizontally (about 3 inches).

As for the butterfly knife – unsure. But the spring knife is against Federal law.

Kentucky has notoriously vague laws on knives. It says that “Ordinary Pocket Knives” are legal. What defines this type of knife, you may ask? The law does not say. So we have to rely somewhat on individual police officer’s judgement and caselaw.
A famous case was White v. KY (2004). White had NINE knives hidden all over his car. Among them, court ruled just three to be illegal concealed weapons: “These three knives are the butterfly knife, the lockblade tactical knife that could be opened with one hand, and the tactical knife with the seven-inch blade.”
Due to knife #2 I’m afraid it would seem that spring assisted knives are illegal in Kentucky because they lock, open with one hand and are frequently have a “tactical” appearance to them.

Every thing is legal as long as you dont get busted.
